WE’LL BE BACK…. Philip Harmer () - Trimmer, 27th April, 2009

It was quite relieving – it was a very frustrating leg, obviously it was a very big stability leg so having a maximum size bulb was the key and obviously we’re not there and that was just a reality, we were prepared for it, but I guess no one is ever prepared to come last in a leg. There’s six other good boats so you have to sort of settle for it and we’ll move on and get ready for the next leg and we’ll be fine. We’ll be back out there and challenging for first again.

Q: When you say you can prepare for it but I’m thinking there’s a group of you guys who have to be some of the most competitive sailors that are around can you ever really prepare to be not maybe as competitive as the rest?
I don’t think so, when you look on the crew on our boat, I mean they could be on any boat in the fleet really any of these guys and it is a bit of a pill to swallow and you’re watching everyone else be a little bit faster but at the same time, you know, it’s nice to be able to...everyone kept pushing hard and everyone tried a little it harder if we have a bad sched everyone tried a bit harder for the next three hours and we wouldn’t loose as much or we’d be equal and that’s sort of the way we played the played the leg, trying – if we lost then we’d try that bit harder to gain it back. It was good, it was a good team effort.

Q: And as sailing goes was it enjoyable?
I don’t think it was the most enjoyable leg of the race, put it that way. It’s a long time doing the same thing – you know we were on the same wind angle and the same sail for four to five days just doing the same thing every four hours so it is one of the more frustrating legs of the race.

Q: Coming into Boston now is quite a strong Irish connection and then the next leg obviously is your home leg, how do you feel about approaching that?
We’ve been talking about the Irish connection here and obviously the Boston Celtics – I like the basketball so I’m going to the basketball tomorrow night so I’m excited about that and then I mean Galway is going to be massive and it’s all we’ve been talking about is can’t wait to get to Galway and that’s going to be, it’s going to be probably one of the tougher legs of the race as well which suits us – our boat suits the ocean rather then the passage racing and coming into Galway is going to be something else as well so everyone is really excited about that part of the race.

THANK YOU

Over 37,000 miles completed, 10 legs, 11 stopover ports and so many memories along the way.  It has been a tough campaign and an emotional rollercoaster at times but there is nothing else I would rather have been doing.
